Large diamond found in state park

A large diamond of 4.68 carats was discovered in the Arkansas State Park on Saturday, in early September. Found in the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, this is the 612th diamond to be discovered by visitors here. Since its first discovery in 1906, the park has so far produced approximately 75,000 diamonds. This is the only state park where visitors can search for diamonds and keep them. The ‘crater of diamonds' is a good region for surface hunting and some visitors have even been lucky to get stones as large as 16 carats. Also the current tropical depressions of Gustav and Ike have improved the possibilities of finding diamonds here. The 4.68 carat stone was found by Richard Burke, a retired high school teacher. He named the stone ‘Sweet Caroline' after the name of his wife and their favorite song by Neil Diamond.

Diamond Buying Tips Print E-mail
After deciding on a budget its time to use the Gemisimo Knowledge and find the best diamond that your budget enables you.

Remember it is all about balance!

In each section we will give you our recommendation which will be divided according to the total budget (Top, High, and Medium),

We strongly recommend Buying GIA certified diamond and consulting with a professional diamond jeweler.

Choosing a Diamond Color

Color grades are divided into groups and there is a good reason for it,

The difference between color grades are very slight and usually are not noticeable to the naked eye even more is true when the diamond is set in an engagement ring.

GIA certificates include these color groups in the inner part of the certificate and by choosing the lower member of the group you can save a lot of money.

If you are buying a round brilliant cut diamond you can pay less attention to the diamond color compared to buying fancy shaped diamond this is so because round diamonds has the best brilliance affect so the color of the diamond is less visible compared to a fancy shape diamond such as pear shape diamond where a tint of yellow is concentrated in the tip of the diamond.

Gemisimo's Choice for Diamond Color (Fancy shaped diamond one grade Higher).

Top: F color

High: I color

Medium: K Color

Choosing a Diamond Clarity

Clarity is examined in a X10 Magnified loupe so there even if there are a few flaws it doesn't necessarily mean that they will be visible.

Most diamonds are set in jewelry pieces so it doesn't make too much sense to buy a diamond we very distinct flaws just like it doesn't make sense to buy a wedding dress with big distinct stains.

Buying a very included stone is a great way to save money but appearance is everything so doing so online is not recommended by Gemisimo team.

A thumb rule SI1 or better the inclusions are hardly visible to the naked eye.

High: VS2

Medium: SI1

Choosing a Diamond Cut Grade

Sorry, but here its all about budget, Cut is an overall estimate regarding the beauty of the diamond, Cut is derived from various factors and the combination of them is crucial.

One small tip is that Very Good Cut diamonds are more than enough and not many professional jewelers can tell the difference between Very Good and excellent Cut diamonds.

Top: Excellent

High: Very Good

Medium: Good

Choosing a Diamond Carat (Weight)

Overweight is good! It all a matter of budget and fitting it to the jewelry but a great tip is not to buy straight sizes 0.67ct and 0.71ct may have the same diameter but because of the rapaport price list 0.67ct would cost less!

To make sure the diamond you selected has the right affect compare its diameter to a diamond in a higher weight group.

Top: 1.85ct

High: 0.95ct

Medium: 0.65ct
