GCAL

The Gem Certification and Association Lab (GCAL) is an America based diamond research and identification laboratory that specializes in diamond grading. Located in New York's diamond building, this laboratory is a subsidiary of Collectors Universe Inc, a NASDAQ Global markets traded company. Being the only diamond grading laboratory that is part of a publicly traded company, it is the only laboratory that provides public financial reports, has audited internal controls, and follows regulations set by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. The laboratory also has access to capital markets and can also be owned at NASDAQ through Collectors Universe, giving customers the opportunity to own publicly traded shares.

Certified Diamond Exchange

This was launched in October 2007 as a free online service, whereby JBT listed retailers, manufacturers and wholesalers could easily buy, sell and trade GCAL certified diamonds. This helps to provide retail jewelers with a steady source of diamonds that are authentic and are certified by GCAL. Thus while for diamond retailers, CDE offers the benefit of free services, for diamond sellers the exchange offers a platform of heavily marketed diamond trading backed with suitable resources.

Achievements and clients

Statistics reveal that in the year 2007, Collector's universe graded items that together value $1.8 million approximately. In April 2008, the laboratory received the ISO 17025:2005 accreditation, as per which the laboratory conforms to recognized international standards for reliable diamond grading. It is the official diamond laboratory for the International Colored Gemstone Association for North America. Its other clients include the JCK shows, Couture, and the JA shows. The organization also offers a range of e-learning programs that provide information about GCALs diamond certificates. These programs can be availed by diamond salespersons. The online educational sales training program is being offered free of charge to those interested.

Lab Services

This includes the five star diamond certificate, ideal cut certificate, direct light performance analysis, GemFacts digital certification data mini CD, SourceVeritas passport, and Gemprint. Among these, the five star diamond certificate combines technical, sales, security and all relevant information about the diamond into one certificate. While GemFacts offers an electronic record of diamond data, the SourceVeritas passport assures about the source, safety and security of the diamond. Finally Gemprint is a highly sophisticated, non-invasive diamond identification and registration system. The highlight feature of its services is the ‘Zero tolerance' consumer grading guarantee. As per this, cash back offers can be availed in case of any mistake in grading or identifying certified diamonds. The laboratory offers top of the line services owing to its state of the art technologies. Its systems include the DTC DiamondSure, DTC DiamondView, FTIR Infrared spectrophotometer and Raman spectrometer.
