Deciding the right ring size for your partner is important for getting a good fit. If you and your partner are shopping together you can ask your partner to get the ring size measured by a professional. However if you are shopping online or prefer your ring to be a surprise, then you can use the various tools or methods listed below.

Measuring the circumference and diameter

If you have your partner’s ring with you, the following chart may be handy. Print the chart listed below and place the ring on the circle where it fits. In order to double check you can also compare the diameter on the diagram with that of the ring. If your ring size falls between two sizes, it is safer to order for the larger size. The inside width of the ring (diameter) can also be considered for checking ring sizes.

The string method

If the first method leaves you with an element of doubt you can use the string method too. Take a piece of string or a strip or paper and wrap it around the ring finger so it fits snugly. Mark the point where the string overlaps. Place the piece of string on a scale to measure its length. You can also use a printed version of the below given chart for measuring the piece of string.

Ring sizer

Few sites also offer free ring sizers. These are usually strips of paper or plastic with sizes preprinted on them. A ring sizer can be wrapped around the finger and the user can slide the loop till the point where the sizer overlaps. While this seems useful, many of its versions are available for free online and can easily be printed and used.

Measuring with the International chart

The international ring sizing chart is also an excellent option for cross-checking your results. In fact this is ideal, as you will get measurements that are used in different countries. While most online sites use US/ Canada standards, keeping in view other standards can help you compare easily.

Tips on determining the right ring size

When you are measuring your ring size on your own, keep the following handy tips in mind.

  • The easiest way to measure ring size is by trying on different wedding bands. Once you find a size that fits, request the jeweler to specify its size.
  • Measure your ring size in millimeters. If you have requested your jeweler to give you the details ask for them in millimeters. You will need details about the ring circumference and its diameter.
  • Do not measure your finger while you are wet or cold. In fact, taking a ring size measurement at body temperature is normal. Wet hands often lead you to measuring ring size that is lesser than normal.
  • If using a string, use a cotton one instead of a stretchable string. This is because the latter may stretch while you use it on your finger and give the wrong measurements.
  • If your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger, measure both the knuckle and the diameter of the base. Then take an average size between the two.
  • If you experience swelling of your finger during certain days or during a certain time of the day, take your ring measurement at a convenient time.

Choosing the right ring size is an important decision. While many stores offer free services of ring sizing, do keep in mind that certain metals like titanium cannot be resized. Also certain sizes are only made to order and cannot be resized. Do consider the number of days it will take for you to ship your ring for resizing and for the company to resize it and ship it back to you. To make things easy, opt for the best ring size by using the above professional tools. Do specify your ring size in millimeters too, to make it easier for the store. If you continue to doubt the right size of your ring, do ask the store if they have a money back guarantee in place, in case the ring does not fit.
