Platinum is a much preferred metal of choice in diamond jewelry. The metal gained popularity since the eighteenth century when owing to its rarity King Louis XV of France declared that it was the only metal fit for a king. Symbolized by Pt, this metal is stronger than gold and silver in its purest form. The term platinum comes from the Spanish word platina which means ‘little silver'.

In its purest form, the metal is grey-white in color. It is also an important investment vehicle, as many countries like US, Canada, Australia and China mint platinum coins for purchasing as investments. The main properties that make platinum special are its purity, rarity, versatility and durability. Platinum, though expensive, is highly durable and suitable for all types of skins. Its purity ranges from 99.9% to 99.5% in acceptable standards.

Designs in Platinum Rings

As platinum is a sturdy metal it can be crafted in a range of designs. Intricate filigree work can be done on these rings and they can also be found in two tone combinations with gold. Multi-tone rings with other metals can also be chosen. Due to its strength, platinum is a metal of choice for holding precious gemstones like diamonds in it.

Difference between white gold and platinum

Platinum and white gold look quite similar but platinum is much more expensive than gold. In such circumstances, many often wonder about the differences and why they should opt for platinum. Here are a few reasons,

  • White gold is an alloy, does not suit everyone and can cause allergic reactions. Platinum on the other hand is a highly pure metal and is hypo allergic, often suiting the most sensitive skin types too.
  • Platinum is also sturdier than gold being the ideal choice for holding precious gemstones.
  • Finally gold is much easily available, while platinum is five times more rare than gold.

Pros of platinum

  • Hypoallergenic and thus can be used by people with sensitive skin also.
  • Highly durable, corrosion resistant and does not tarnish when exposed to air and water.
  • It is considered to be extremely precious as it is rare.
  • Highly resistant to attack by chemicals.

Cons of platinum

Highly expensive with its price usually being twice the price of gold.

Platinum Jewelry Care

  • Store pieces of jewelry in separate bags so they do not mix and scratch with other items of jewelry. A cloth lined bag is best for the purpose.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals when wearing platinum rings. While platinum is not affected by chemicals, gemstones in rings may get discolored.
  • Over a period of time, platinum develops a natural patina which is preferred by many. However for those who prefer the polished look, platinum can be taken for regular polishing at the jeweler.
  • Clean platinum jewelry regularly by using mild soap and water. A soft cloth must be used to dry the jewelry. A jewelry cleaning solution provided by the jeweler can also be used.
  • Get your platinum jewelry professionally cleaned once in every eighteen months. Ensure that the jeweler has a platinum trained worker for adjusting, polishing, resizing and cleaning your jewelry.
